  An Unforgettable Night

Life is about taking risk, so go out and take yours

Jay trudged up to his apartment. He was done with the day, maybe the month. He’d been on a work trip for the past month and he couldn’t wait to get inside shower and relax. There was a crash behind him before he opened his door. Jay dropped his bags and turned to help Mrs. Bern in apartment 2B right across the hall.

“Hey Mrs. Bern let me help you with that.”

“Oh Jay you’re back,” she said cheerfully. She was a petite seventy-five year old woman who Jay helped whenever he was in town.

He picked up the grocery bags, collecting all the scattered soup cans. “I’ll get these.”

She stood with a hand on her lower back. Jay made a mental note to make sure to check with the nurse that came to see her three times a week; she should see a chiropractor.

“I’m so glad you’re home. That boss of yours, always running you around.”

Jay smiled. Mrs. Bern was the nicest old lady; she reminded him so much of his late grandma.

“I made sure to grab you a souvenir.”

Jay followed her into her apartment, the layout much like his own. He unloaded the groceries putting them all away. Mrs. Bern hadn’t had any children and Jay knew sometimes she was lonely.

“How about I come over and we watch a nature documentary?” Jay offered.

She shuffled in next to him and lightly patted him on the back. “Oh no you don’t. You have been working yourself to the bone.” She shook her head. “You’re young. Go live a little.”

He’s been this way his whole life clinging to one thing and sticking with it. It made Jay boring and sure at times he wanted to have fun but that never seems to be the case.

“I live all the time Mrs. Bern. I wa-”

“Living and surviving is different. You should be out there having the time of your life. If I was twenty years younger, I’d show you how to have some fun.” She got a dreamy look in her eyes.

Jay laughed lightly and pressed a kiss to the old lady’s cheek. “You’re the youngest seventy-five year old I know.”

She blushed swatting at Jay. “And don’t you forget it. Now you put away my groceries. This old lady is going to turn in early.”

Jay left with promises to check on her tomorrow. He made his way over to his apartment, picking up his bags. He opened his door and on his floor was a black card with gold lettering that he was sure hadn’t been there before. His name was printed in full in stylized writing.

On the back of the invitation there was a downtown address. As far as Jay remembered, none of his friends were getting married, and to send out an invitation the day of was strange. Jay flipped the invite over again, studying it, and trying with all his might to think of why such a thing came to him.

He chewed on his bottom lip, a habit he never could get rid of. Jay placed the invitation on his counter and instead went to his fridge. No food. No surprise, since he’d forgotten to order groceries before he got back.

Fast food in his belly and clean from the shower, Jay got ready to binge some mindless television. His phone beeped and he was going to ignore it, but it beeped again. Jay sighed, picking up his phone and saw a few emails from his boss. He groaned at the thought of going into work so late at night. But Jay lived for his job, so no matter how tired he was, he was going to go to work.

Jay made it to the office. Besides him, only the janitors were there. He made quick work of going over the merger’s numbers and the change of factories. It took longer than he’d planned, but at last he was done. A knock at his door made Jay jump.

  “Yes?”

A woman with bright pink hair opened the door. Jay was pretty sure she didn’t work in the office. Then again, he's been gone for a month.

  “Can I help you?”

She smiled at Jay, a hint of fang gleaming in the light. “You can come out and have some fun.”

Jay was confused and a bit weirded out, but after the amount of work he’d just pushed through, a night out sounded good. He couldn’t believe he was even thinking about going. He shut his computer down expecting to ask the woman about going out, but when he looked up she was nowhere in sight.

  Weird

Jay got into his car and sat there drumming his fingers on the steering wheel. He should just go home and finish his documentary, maybe open a bottle of wine. But no matter how reasonable the other options were, Jay’s eyes continued to stray over to the black invitation that now sat on his passenger seat. He must have brought it with him without realizing it.

He really wasn’t going to go, was he?

The mysterious woman had got him thinking, though. It was late, but he’d also had such a long month… He put the car in reverse and pulled out of the parking garage, his fingers still strumming an unknown beat on the steering wheel.

“Nope, not a good idea,” Jay muttered to himself, biting his lower lip absentmindedly.

He kept thinking that even as he turned right to get onto the highway instead of heading home. Then, he drove further downtown toward the one place he probably shouldn’t go. But call him a fucking cat, he was just too curious to turn it down. Jay was already out of the house. He might as well make it worthwhile.

The address took him to the Autre Mondain Grand Hotel. There was no parking allowed. He would have to have his car valet parked among cars that were worth twice his yearly salary. Jay pulled up, and a valet guy with pale skin, dark eyes and brown hair sauntered up to the car. He opened the door and stared at Jay as if he was in the wrong area, but didn’t voice it.

Jay felt out of place, so out of it he barely noticed how hot the guy was. Couldn’t even attempt to flirt.

“Invitation sir?” The Valet asked a smooth rich tone that had the effect of making heat pull in Jay’s lower half.

Damn, the guy had a voice for sex.

It took Jay an embarrassingly amount of time to realize what the guy had asked for. He reached for the invitation on his passenger seat. The valet glanced at it and instantly gave Jay a smile with brilliantly white teeth.

“You are to go up the elevator to the top floor and someone will be there to show you where to go.”

>   Jay stood there for another second as a shiver racked through him. Damn, it should be illegal to sound so hot. The valet took a step toward Jay, pressing his lean body against him.

He felt cold; it was mid-August, the hottest month of the year. The guy should be sweating in his get up, even with the sun down.

“Unless you want to stay down here with me.” Cool breath ghosted over Jay’s neck, making goosebumps rise. “I could make it worth it. Show you something you’ve never seen before.”

It was a tempting offer and Jay wasn’t one to turn down such a handsome opportunity. He heard a popping sound behind him.

  “You made it.”

Like a cold splash of water to his face, Jay pulled away from the sexy voice valet to see the woman who had invited him out. Her bright pink hair was done up in ponytails and her outfit had changed slightly, but it was still just as revealing.

  “Uh—.”

“Well come on, the fun is inside,” she said, as she turned around, expecting Jay to follow.

The valet took a few steps back and kept his facial features in check. All of sudden, Jay didn’t feel all too comfortable here. His instincts screamed for him to run the other way and never look back.

  “Come on,” the woman said.

Jay stuck close to the woman, but no one paid them any attention. They walked past the front desk and straight down the hallway to the elevator.

There was a resounding ding and Jay followed three steps behind the mysterious lady onto the elevator, only lifting his head once the doors slid shut..

Jay’s eyes finally landed on the woman as she stood there, staring at her nails and casually popping her gum while she waited.

“Who are you and how do you know me?” Jay blurted out.

Her dark eyes focused on him as she tilted her head to the side, a smile curving her bright pink lips.

  “I’m Aridelle and I know you’re perfect.”

Jay shook his head. He was far from perfect. But more importantly, this didn’t seem to be about him as a person, but more like he was perfect for some unexpected use to her.

“I don’t have enough money for whatever this is,” Jay said.

Aridelle smiled again, fangs showing. “Money? You won’t need that here.”

Jay’s fingers tingled and his palms were clammy. His nerves were all over the place but he was too curious to walk away now. The elevator dinged, announcing their arrival, before Jay could ask another question. Aridelle walked off and Jay hesitated for another second before following her. As the elevator door closed, he felt a finality about the decision he’d made.

“Come,” Aridelle said, curving her finger.

Jay followed as they made their way down the hall to a set of large double doors. It was the only entrance on the floor. Jay whistled, knowing that he definitely didn’t make enough money to be in such a place as a guest.

Aridelle gave a light knock. Both doors opened in synchrony and two tall buff men stood at the entrance. They bowed their heads to Aridelle as she entered with J trailing behind her. .

He didn’t know what he’d expected, but what he saw wasn’t it. The room was dark, with dim lights dancing all around. People scattered around, lounging in what Jay could only describe as a large club. Even in the low lighting, Jay noticed a few people had horns on their forehead and others looked as if they had tails.

Jay rubbed at his eyes. He had to be seeing things because there was no way in hell what he saw was the truth. Maybe the party had some sort of costume theme? The horns and takes looked remarkably real, though.

Delicate fingers wrapped around his wrist and tugged. Jay stared at Aridelle, who seemed to fit into the place with ease.

  “This way,” she said.

Jay let himself be led around the place until they came up to a bar. His eyes were still scanning the room and picking out the strange things around him. There were a few people who didn’t have any prosthetics on. But they were always partnered with a costumed person and doing things that Jay quickly averted his eyes from. Women and men alike were scattered around the room.

“Is this a costume party?” Jay asked as he took a stool at the bar.

Aridelle slid him over a folded menu. Jay opened it and browsed it. None of the words were in English or even French.

  “What does this stuff say?”

“Just choose the one that looks right to you,” Aridelle said. She leaned against the counter, pushing out her chest more, while chewing her gum as she watched the room.

Jay didn’t get it, but maybe it was a rich thing. He flipped through the three-page menu, going back to one repeatedly. Vrykólakas.

Aridelle smiled at Jay. “That’s a good choice.”

Jay quickly lifted his finger. “I don’t want to get drunk.”

Aridelle paid him little attention, and the bartender had yet to come over. He sighed, putting the menu down; before he made his choice he needed to speak with the bartender.. He waved his hand, trying to get the man’s attention. It took Aridelle turning around and crooking her finger for the bartender to make his way over to them.

  “I was won-”

“What’s your order?” the bartender asked with a gruff voice. It was thick with an accent that Jay couldn’t place.

  “I have a few qu-”

“You make a choice, that is it.”

“I just want to know what’s in the drink,” Jay grumbled. He looked over to Aridelle for help but she popped her gum, shrugging at him as she waited for Jay to decide.

“I just need to know what’s in it,” Jay rushed out before he could be interrupted again.

The bartender crossed his arms over his meaty chest. His eyes glowed, and Jay was hoping it was a trick of lighting. “Pick one.”

“Fine.” Jay randomly pointed to one, not even looking at which one.

Both Aridelle and the bartender’s eyes widen in surprise. A slow smile curved the bartender’s lips, and jagged teeth showed. He looked Jay up and down skeptically. “You might break.”

Aridelle cleared her throat. “Are you sure about that one, pretty?”

Jay looked between them before checking out which one his finger had landed on. It was under the one he’d kept checking out. Vasilikó daímono plokámi. He’d already chosen. There was no way he would back out now and seem like some wimp. Fingers crossed there was no tequila in the drink. Jay and tequila didn’t mix well. It usually resulted in memory loss and making out with the toilet.

“You said pick and neither one of you would answer if it’s made with tequila.” Jay shrugged. “I can’t be held responsible for my actions if it’s tequila.” Jay tried to laugh and relaxed his nerves. “Might end up on a table dancing.” He shimmied his shoulders and tried to get Aridelle to join in. Needless to say Jay failed and felt even more embarrassed as the seconds ticked away.

Aridelle smiled, fang showing once more. “Get it ready.”

The bartender went about making whatever the drink was. Jay tried to watch, but Aridelle pulled his attention away from the bartender.

“Are you sure you don’t want to just come play with me?”

“What? Um, I’m flattered but you aren’t exactly my thing,” Jay said. He floundered. “Not to say you’re not pretty, but, you know, not my type of pretty. I mean—” Jay shook his head he was blabbering about. “I’m gay.”

Aridelle sighed, pushing out her lower lip in a pout that Jay was sure would make any man drop to his knees.

“I wonder which one will try to claim you,” Aridelle said.

  Claim? “Wha-”

  “Here, one Vasilikó daímono plokámi.”

The drink was colorful blues, pinks, reds, and purples. There were swirls of some fruit inside. Jay had never seen such a beautiful drink. He took in a big breath, trying to smell tequila, but all he got was coconut and something else sweet-smelling. He placed the straw in between his lips, sucking up the sweet drink. He waited for the bitter taste that accompanied alcohol, but nothing
ever came. It was like juice. Some of the best juice Jay had ever had. He finished the drink off in a few swallows.

“That was great, can I get another?” Jay asked.

The bartender was nowhere in sight, only Aridelle still stood next to him.

“Remember to have fun and don’t let just any one of them have you. The Vasilikó daímono plokámi can be brutal. But then again, we all can.” Her eyes momentarily glowed, just like the bartender’s had before.

Jay rubbed at his eyes. Maybe he didn’t need another drink.

“What do you mean?” Jay asked.

“You will see.” Aridelle walked away before Jay could ask anything else.

He thought about getting up and walking after her, but felt eyes on him. Jay rolled his shoulders, trying to shake off the sensation. It wouldn’t budge. He turned on the stool but didn’t make it far. A tall man walked up to Jay with blond hair down to his waist, He was dressed in a fully tailored suit with a hint of tattoo peaking out above the collar of his shirt.

“You’re different,” the man said in a disdainful voice.

The man thought he was better than Jay.

“Yeah I could say the same thing about you.” Jay turned his head, ending the conversation before it even started.

He hopped off the stool and stepped around the tall man. A strong hand wrapped around Jay’s bicep, the grip tight enough to bruise. Okay, that was a little hot, but still Jay wasn’t into men who were cocky. It was a sure way to guarantee shitty sex. Self-absorbed assholes were usually selfish lovers.

“You lowly human,” the man gritted out through clenched teeth. They were all razor sharp.

“Do you mind letting go?” Jay asked, surprised by how calm he sounded.

“You drank of our life. You are free for me to take.”
